Last week, in one of the most forward policies I think this government has ever made, Access. Inclusion. Equality was announced. To those of you who don't know what it's about, basically it's an investment towards the further inclusion of people with disabilties into society in this province. For more on the policy click here:
http://www.releases.gov.nl.ca/releases/2012/aes/0419n03.htm
What this policy does is it invests further into the disabled in this province's society. It has 3.3 million dollars for people with disabilties to retrofit their vehicles, improve accesbility to government offices and community servoces etc.
It also announced 3.2 million dollars for the Opening Doors program which has me intirgued. The Opening Doors program is a program designed to give people with disabilties a chance to hone their workplace skills in the public service. As someone with a disability (I am mildly autistic) I know the full value of this program and am pleased as punch to see government investment in the program. I've availled of that program on many an occasion and I tell you it's great. Through the program I've honed my skills working for numerous government departments and hope to avail of it again, this extra boost to the program could really help me in that regard.
1 problem I do have is that I hope this money is not still sitting there next year unspent. I hope the government has done it's homework here and further educates these departments on the benefits of hiring people with disabilities. My 4 supervisors during my time working with the province will tell you what a great worker I am, I've dedicated to my work and my work ethic is 2nd to none. I can tell you a lot of people with disabilties in this province are the same thing. They're just waiting for a chance to prove themselves as I have done and want to continue to do so. Let's just hope that the different government depts. want to give these people with disabilties a chance.
Oh and before I go I will be giving a special blog later on this week about today's provincial budget, unsure of the day but there will be a special blog later on this week.
